July 15th
A dust colored pup laid in the front window with many other puppies. His folded ears twitched and he kept his gaze on his paws, waiting. Waiting was all he could do. Waiting for a human of some sort to arrive and hopefully adopt him. The older female dog that used to sleep in the nest in the corner of the same area that he was in toward the left had been adopted out. Why though? Why did a person adopt her? She slept most of the time, didn't anyone want a puppy? A young soul that would most likely last a long time? A sigh left him as he thought about taking a nap however his ears son perked and he raised his head. That sound. The ding of the front door opening that singled a human entering this shop. Sitting up, he turned his gaze to the humans that had entered. It was a tall female human and with her was a smaller version of herself it seemed, sure different fur on the top of the smaller one's head. But other than that there wasn't much different. The small female human went over to where the dust colored pup and the other puppies where, all of them excited and wagging their little days, trying their hardest to look even cuter than they already were. The dust colored pup rose to his paws and went over to where they were all gathering in their attempts to get adopted.
Making a cute and happy expression on his face, his thin tail wagged quickly as he stood on his hind legs. He wanted to get adopted. It didn't matter to him the gender of the human, he just wanted to get adopted. The little girl laughed at all of the small bundles of fur as they all piled over to the corner of the cage they were in; though there was no top to the cage. Slowly holding her hand down, she started to pet each one of them on the head. The last pup she petted was the dust colored one and he managed to get a few licks in. Was this it? Was he finally getting adopted?
The little girl called for her mother to come over and the taller human did just that. The taller human smiled at them all and the dust colored puppy sat down, tail wagging and tongue hanging out of his mouth with excitement and panting. The little girl pointed to one of the puppies in the group and the dust colored pup rose to his paws, hoping it was him. The owner of the pet shop came over and the girl showed him the one she wanted. The man's hands came into the small area and the dust colored pup jumped up and down excitedly. Yes! YES! In his excitement, he misjudged his landing and fell down on his face. The man's hands picked up a white puppy instead since it was the one the girl pointed to and took the pup out of the cage, thus handing it to the little girl.
The dust colored pup raised his head and stared in shock. No....why? Why not him? Folded ears lowered and his tail stopped wagging. Why not him? He was just as cute as the other pups, sure he wasn't a specific breed but no one else here probably was. Seeing the two humans go away from the cage and pay for the white pup, the dust colored pup watched them leave disheartened. Why? Every time humans came in here, they skip him over. Rising to his paws he moved away from where he was sitting and sat down closer to the window. There were so many humans out there, why did none want him? He deserved to be adopted!!
Every day and every night, he could recall who got adopted. Heck, there used to be dalmatian pups here at one time right? Well they were all adopted by some strange humans and taken to a home most likely. Looking to the top of cage, he rose to his paws and went over to the side of the cage, keeping his gaze where it was. He had no chances here, he wasn't going to get adopted. Humans didn't care! They were cruel and it was nothing but a lie. Crouching down, he was just about to jump when he saw another human come over to the door and enter the shop. His hope started to come back but he was trying not to get his hopes up, so standing up straight, his young gaze followed the human who was now walking around the store. They weren't even interested in any of the puppies seeing as how they went over to the kittens.
That was it. That was the last straw! Bending down once more, he jumped as high as he could waving his front paws to try and latch onto the edge of the cage. Failing to do so, he fell back down into the cage and landed on his behind. A growl left the dust colored pup as he bent down once more and jumped as high as he could, failing once more and falling back down. He wasn't going to give up, he was sick and tired of sitting in this window. Backing up a little bit, he ran toward the edge and jumped, this time he made it over the top of the cage and landed on the cold hard floor of the store.
"I did!" the dust colored pup said, though to the humans it would just be a simple bark.
The other pups were making a ruckus at him, some trying to get him to get back in the cage somehow while others encouraged him on. He was glad but now he had another problem. The commotion caused the owner of the shop to come and see what was going on and thus seeing the dust colored pup out of the cage, he started toward the pup. Going to the door, the dust colored pup tried to open the door. Sadly he couldn't pull on the door to open it since it wasn't a push door. Running away from the door for now, he tried to find some other way out while trying to avoid the owner's grasp. The other human in the shop tried to help out but it was clear they weren't sure on how to help out. Making his way toward teh door once more, the door was being opened by a woman and picking up the pace, the pup ran past her and out into the busy streets of London.
"I'm free!! Take that you cold hearted humans!!!" the dust colored pup barked back at the shop as he continued to run.
Several hours had passed and a storm had broken out, rain pouring down and thundering booming in the sky. The dust colored pup took shelter in a alley under a trash clan lid that was sitting upright leaning against the trash can itself and thus provided a very small but dry spot. Now where would he go? Anywhere without humans, that was best. Though....he needed to think of something to call himself. The collar on his neck didn't have any name on it and the shop owner never called him anything.
Hm...what name should I use? The dust colored pup thought as he sat there. I know!! Locker!
Yes. For some reason the pup liked the sound of Locker being his name. A smile came to his face before a yawn left him and he laid down. Locker was going to be his name for now on. No humans would name him. They lost their chance to do that.
